Annual Fire Hydrant Maintenance
All fire hydrants have many purposes but most known for fire fighting. It is for this reason that the Ontario Fire Code and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) have rules, laws and legislation in place, to ensure their proper function and state of repair. As part of which, it is essential they be checked for various criterias annually.
The water that sits in these fire hydrants is treated potable water. It is obviously important for this water to remain potable, in good standards and safe. It is for this reason that that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MOECC), the Ontario Safe Drinking Water Act (OSDWA) and Ontario Water Works Association (OWWA), have put together their own rules, laws, legislation and regulations. (some of us can recall the Walkerton fiasco!!!)
Finally, many municipalities have added their own bylaws to abide by when using or maintaining them. Of course we can’t forget the manufacturer’s maintenance recommendations.
For all these reasons, it is imperative and mandatory, that any person working with fire hydrants be licensed, experienced, and knowledgeable
WaterSome is the contractor you need, with all of these qualifications.

Private Fire Hydrants
If you are here, chances are you own a fire hydrant. There is really good information in the “general information” section above, and in this “flyer” we put together. But let us simplify that for you.
1. You are required to have your fire hydrants checked annually.
2. Only licensed water operators are permitted to perform any tasks with your fire hydrants.
3. You will require documentation from time to time for insurance or fire inspector requests.
4. No. The city does not take care of that for you
5. We have the best maintenance program that can be offered, hands down.
It is likely you have seen city staff operating them. The City of Greater Sudbury have confirmed their checks are/were for their own purposes, their own agenda, and did not meet the criterias set forth by the various identities. It is not guaranteed they will continue to do so, or even at all moving forward. They will not provide you with documentation, they will not conduct any repairs, and they will not be held responsible for any malfunction or otherwise. They are yours, the onus is on you to be proactive and ensure their proper function and state of repair.
Please check out our world famous maintenance program, you won’t be disappointed!!!
Don’t be left behind by your insurance company when they find out your fire hydrant has never been checked or doesn’t work!
Fire Hydrant Painting
There are various options for hydrant painting. At it’s simplest, we clean, metal brush and reapply paint to your fire hydrant. At the most efficient, we remove the hydrant body, send it for complete sandblasting, and have a powder coat applied, which renders it better looking than when it was new!

Fire Hydrant Flow Testing
We are qualified and experienced in conducting fire hydrant flow testing. This is usually asked by insurance companies, or by engineering firms. Whatever the background of the request, we collaborate with all parties involved to get the test done. It is often frowned upon by the appropriate water authority due to the likely possibility of water disruption through the system.
